Dance vision
Dance gives students the opportunity to express themselves through performance, and choreography. Students will gain confidence through regular performances and learn to create their own dance pieces through the creative choreographic process. Dance teaches fundamental life skills, such as resilience, teamwork and compassion for and understanding of others. In addition dance choreography provides a different medium for self-expression, and an exploration of current world and political issues. We hope that students enjoy the practical nature of Dance and gain a love and appreciation for the subject.
At Key Stage four students study a range of dance styles including Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, Latin and Street. Performance technique is taught alongside choreographic tasks to facilitate the development of the all-round dancer. Students gain an appreciation for professional dance works through the study of the AQA Dance anthology. They will gain the confidence to analyse and evaluate live and recorded professional pieces and will gain the courage to make their own judgements.
Students will perform individually and as part of a group and will choreograph their own solo or group dance for external assessment.
The overarching ambition for all students of Dance is that they will gain the confidence to pursue their own ideas, become reflective practitioners and great communicators, whilst enjoying a deeper understanding of the intricacies of dance performance technique. We hope that some pupils will pursue a career in Dance after leaving SFX, but we can be sure that all pupils will be equipped with transferable skills, applicable both in further studies and in the workplace as a result of the Dance lessons enjoyed at school. All pupils should have the opportunity to celebrate our Gospel values of Compassion and Courage throughout all performance work, as well as reflecting on their stewardship and responsibilities for our world.
