SEND Vision

To develop their personal, social and intellectual potential to their fullest extent. The learning support team provide compassion and support to build courage and resilience which will enable each pupil to fulfil their potential.

Pupils of all abilities have individual needs, the more able as well as those with learning difficulties. However, some pupils cannot fulfil their potential without the provision of extra resource, either for a limited time or for the whole of their school life.

It is normal practice at St Francis Xavier School to use outstanding high quality teaching to endeavour to meet the needs of pupils. The school aims to:

Ensure access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for all students.
Identify students with additional needs and disabilities.

Identify the nature of the additional need or disability and to implement appropriate learning, behavioural and social skills programmes to meet that need as far as resources will allow.
Raise the self-esteem of students with additional needs and disabilities.
Support staff in curriculum areas in adapting schemes of work and implementing suitable provision for all students.
Ensure continuity across all Key Stages.

The Learning Support department works to identify, assess and meet the special needs of students at St Francis Xavier School. Once at St Francis, students may be referred by parents, subject teachers or by the Head of Year whenever a barrier to learning is identified. Student progress is regularly monitored and assessments are carried out throughout the year.

Our aim is to provide appropriate support, whilst allowing all students to follow a full, broad and balanced curriculum that can be personalised to meet individual need. Support assistants work alongside subject teachers in the classroom. Students may be withdrawn from some lessons to follow an intensive literacy and/or numeracy programme with Learning Support staff. We also offer interventions during morning registration: Units of Sound, Better Reading Partners, Handwriting Speed Up, 1to1 Catch Up and Read Write Gold.
