Geography

Geography vision

The Geography Curriculum explores our physical and human worlds and the themes that link them.  We investigate exciting and relevant topics, developing geographic skills and building knowledge and understanding of the world around us.

Themes are developed from local, national and global scales and allow students to think about their place, role and responsibilities as global stewards around each topic.  The school’s ethos is reinforced when investigating attitudes towards important current issues such as the environment, migration and development. This allows students to show compassion and courage to investigate and tackle our changing world. In geography, students serve God by dedicating time to reflect on ways to improve our community and environment.

Geography enables students to travel the world from their classroom and examine some of the most important topical issues and challenges facing our planet.  Opportunities for fieldwork encourage an enquiry-based approach to further investigate our physical and human environments and to enrich our student’s lives through tangible experiences beyond the classroom.

The skills and knowledge introduced at Key Stage 3 helps develop students into learners who are equipped with the skills and experience to approach the GCSE curriculum with confidence.  As pupils progress through the Key Stage 3 topics students can develop informed views and respect other opinions about a range of geographical concerns.

Key Stage 4 lessons link directly to the AQA GCSE specification and also encourage cross-curricular activities.  Inclusive, interesting and exciting teaching is differentiated to encourage all learners to access the curriculum and to succeed.

Geographers leave with a fantastic skill-set including the ability to research, map, evaluate and analyse.  Many students continue their studies in Geography at A-Level and Degree Level and go on to pursue exciting, relevant careers.

Enrichment opportunities

The following enrichment opportunities inspire our students to be curious and fascinated with the world around them. This allows them to extend their locational knowledge and deepen their spiritual awareness as well as collecting, analysing and interpreting places and data.

  • School microclimate project
  • Yorkshire Dales Rivers Fieldwork
  • Year 9 Residential Fieldwork – Lake District
  • Year 10 / 11 Fieldtrip to Blencathra
  • GCSE Coastal Fieldwork
  • GCSE Urban Fieldwork

Historically, international trips have been offered to enhance the GCSE course.

🌟 Careers Marketplace Success! 🌟

On Tuesday, our Year 9 and Year 10 students took part in an exciting Careers Marketplace event, giving them the chance to meet and speak with professionals from a wide range of industries.
Students asked insightful questions about career pathways, the world of work, and what day-to-day life is really like in different professions. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to explore future possibilities, gain valuable advice, and learn about the many routes available to them after school.

The event was a huge success, with students fully engaged throughout and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

A massive thank you to ConocoPhillips, Browns of Richmond, St Mary's RC Primary School, The Georgian Theatre, Purple Creative Studio, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Navy, and North Yorkshire Police for sharing their expertise, inspiring our students, and helping to make the day so memorable.

👏 Thank you for investing in the future of our young people!
